Creature, Critter, Creatures, Critters

I can be funny about words sometimes. For example, take the words “creature” and “critter,” and their plurals. They mean the same thing, but put different images in my mind.
The word “creature” almost always makes me think of a large, often shaggy, animal, or a being from another planet or galaxy.[sidenote: I think I’m getting an idea for a future post.] Somehow, the word doesn’t bring any SMALL animal to my mind, despite the line, “Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”
The word “critters” makes me visualize a group of small animals; the word “creatures,” all animals.
But I have to make an exception in the case of MyKitty, hence the earlier “almost always.” In spite of his size, and the fact that he didn’t come from outer space, I think of him as a creature rather than a critter.
But mostly, I just think of him as my cat!
